About the museum
Kvæfjord bygdetun lies by the sea near Råelva, just east of Borkenes, and is run by Sør-Troms Museum. Rural heritage farmsteads (bygdetun) became common in the municipalities in the 1960s, and the work here began at Råelva. In 1968 two mill houses (kvernhus) from the 19th century were moved here from Dale and Mollvika. Then came a storehouse (stabbur) from Vebostad, where the grain from the mills was stored, and finally the schoolroom, which was originally built at Refsnes in 1893.
In the schoolroom, visitors can experience a traditional school day without modern technology, with a blackboard, old school books, posters, old desks and a stove for cold and wet children. In this way one gets an impression of everyday and school life in the 19th and 20th centuries.
