About the museum
Sandtorg Bygdetun lies behind the church in Sørvik and is regarded as one of Sør-Troms Museum's most complete rural heritage farmsteads. It was founded on 3 June 1959 by Bendiks Heide, Oskar Sørvik and Dagfinn Magnussen. Harstad municipality owns the site, and Sør-Troms Museum runs it. Magnar Stenhaug led the museum from 1984 to 2018.
The main building is Ursinstua from around 1789, where household utensils, furniture, textiles and clothing show the everyday life of fisher-farmers in Northern Norway in the 1800s and 1900s. In the farmyard there are also two barns, a sheepfold, a stable, a smithy and Harstad's oldest prison from 1820. The collection includes many tools, and a shoemaker's workshop has also been set up.
