About the museum
Skjærstad sildoljefabrikk (herring oil factory) lies at Kasfjorden north of Harstad and is the only fully preserved herring oil factory from this period in Norway. The site has national status as a technical and industrial cultural monument.
The factory opened in 1922 and operated for only six years, until 1928. All production was powered by a steam engine of 17 horsepower. Engineer Agnar Kaarbø designed the factory, including a combined continuous boiler and press. After it closed in 1928 the site was left untouched until it was rediscovered and converted into a museum in the 1990s. Sør-Troms Museum runs it today.
