About the museum
Moss by- og industrimuseum (city and industrial museum) lies in Møllebyen, right by Mossefossen, in an old mill building. Here, hydropower, work and industry have shaped the town for more than 300 years. The museum calls itself the town's memory and is a branch of Østfoldmuseene.
The permanent exhibition “De som var, vi som er” (Those Who Were, We Who Are) fills two floors and takes visitors through four industrial revolutions, from the first steam-powered sawmills of the 19th century via Moss Glassverk and Petersons Papirfabrikk to today's questions about artificial intelligence and sustainability. The exhibition is built around play and interactive tasks, including an assembly-line game, a control room from Peterson, robots and a reconstructed 1950s kitchen.
Nearby lie Verksgata and Konvensjonsgården, which are linked to Moss jernverk (Moss Ironworks, 1704–1875). The ironworks was the largest enterprise in Moss at the time and an important reason why the town received town status in 1720. The museum offers guided tours of both the ironworks and the history of the town, and Mølla Café is located just inside the entrance.
