About the museum
Møbelmuseet in Sykkylven shows how Sunnmøre became a powerhouse of Norwegian furniture manufacturing with customers all over the world. The story begins at the planing bench in a basement and is about entrepreneurial spirit, creativity and great change in small communities. The furniture industry grew up in a village that did not have the obvious advantages of capital, raw materials and proximity to the market.
The museum is a documentation centre for the Norwegian furniture industry. It has a large library, archive material from many furniture companies, a picture archive and a large collection of furniture and production equipment that shows the development of furniture production in Norway from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day.
The permanent exhibition “Ver så god, sitt!” (Please, Take a Seat!) presents the main features of the history of the upholstered furniture industry in Sunnmøre. In summer 2026 the exhibition “Frå stein til sittemaskinar” (From Stone to Sitting Machines) opened. The museum is run by Viti and has an active volunteer group, and it is located together with Naturmuseet in Sykkylven town centre.
