About the museum
Munkholmen is a small island in the Trondheim fjord, about two kilometres from Trondheim city centre. In the Middle Ages, Nidarholm monastery was located here, and the monks built up an economic power in Trøndelag with land, trade, shipping and brewing. Later the island was used as a fortress and a prison, and it has also been a place of execution.
Today Munkholmen is a popular excursion and visitor destination in the summer. The scheduled boat departs from Ravnkloa in central Trondheim, and visitors can join a guided tour that tells the story of the island as a monastery, fortress and prison, or walk around on their own along the fortress wall and the smooth rock outcrops (svaberg). On the island there is a café and bar in the fortress complex, and the premises are also used for company events, weddings and other occasions. The island is closed in winter.
