About the museum
Nordland nasjonalparksenter is located at Storjord in Saltdal, just north of Saltfjellet, and consists of two professional units: Besøkssenter nasjonalpark Nordland (the national park visitor centre) and the Adde Zetterquist art gallery. The centre is a foundation with broad regional roots, established in cooperation between municipalities, public bodies, research communities and voluntary organisations in Nordland. It conveys knowledge about national parks and other protected areas, nature, outdoor life, and Norwegian and Sámi culture.
In the exhibition “Uerstattelig” (Irreplaceable), visitors can get to know the five national parks the centre is authorised for: Rago, Láhko, Junkerdal, Sjunkhatten and Saltfjellet–Svartisen. The exhibition covers geology, fauna, wildlife and history, and begins with films about the parks. A separate room shows changing exhibitions.
The exhibition surrounds an activity area with stations for activity-based learning and a bonfire site. From the centre a path leads down to Roparneset, where a reconstructed Sámi settlement with two gammer (turf huts) and a traditional cotter’s farm (husmannsplass) can be found. The area is to a large extent universally designed, with trails and bonfire sites accessible to wheelchair users. The art gallery shows paintings and drawings by Per Adde and Kajsa Zetterquist and has a guest gallery with several exhibitions a year.
