About the museum

Pressemuseet Fjeld-Ljom is housed in the former newspaper building of the newspaper Fjeld-Ljom, which was founded in Røros in 1886 by printer Olaf O. Berg. The paper mixed local news with radical Venstre politics and was published from the building by the Hytteelva river until 1975. Berg bought the building in 1891, and the editorial office, typesetting room and printing works were left almost untouched when the paper moved out.

After some years, newspaper enthusiasts took the initiative for a museum, and it opened in 1986 thanks to a great deal of voluntary effort. Since 1991 a friends' association has run the museum as a working museum. The building is owned by Rørosmuseet, while Pressemuseet Fjeld-Ljoms Venner (the museum's friends) look after the machines.

The collection includes several typesetting machines of the Linotype and Intertype types, around 70 type cases, a Typograph and a Ludlow for headlines, as well as printing presses, among them an Italian Nebiolo. Volunteers keep the equipment running and set and print a four-page museum newspaper in lead type every year.
