About the museum

Tynset bygdemuseum was founded in 1923 by the free-minded youth associations (frilynte ungdomslag) of Tynset and Tynset Mållag (language association), with Embret Godtland as its first leader. The museum park shows houses from the district, including Lonåsstua, an Østerdal house (Østerdalsstue) from the 1750s with decoration from around 1780, a kornlåve (grain barn) from 1709, a barfrø from around 1780, a cowshed from 1760 and a copper beaters' workshop (kobberslagerverksted).

The Occupation Museum in Klengstua was opened in the park on 8 November 1996 by Nord-Østerdal Forsvarsforening (the Nord-Østerdal defence association) together with Musea i Nord-Østerdalen. The collection conveys the war years 1940–45 in Nord-Østerdalen and glimpses of the resistance movement. Klengstua was originally used for drying cones for seed harvesting.

Tynset museums- og historielag (museum and local history society) owns the museum. Since 2015 Anno museum has been responsible for the buildings and objects, while the historielag runs the operation. The park is used a great deal by schools and nurseries and as a learning place for immigrants.
