About the museum
Rørosmuseet has its main exhibition in Smelthytta at Malmplassen, one of the buildings of the Røros Kobberverk (Røros Copper Works), in the middle of the mining town of Røros, which is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The museum is today part of Museene i Sør-Trøndelag (MiST) and functions as the World Heritage centre for the Røros mining town and the Circumferensen.
In Smelthytta the exhibition “Kobberverket” (The Copper Works) shows how resource use, mining and smelting shaped the town and the region for more than 300 years. The exhibition “Ti finpussa” shows festive costumes (stasklær) from Røros in the 19th century, and a separate section tells of Sámi history in the mining town. The museum also has changing art and theme exhibitions.
Nearby is the Bygningsvernsenteret (Building Conservation Centre) in Kurantgården, and Rørosmuseet also runs the Olavsgruva mine outside the town, where visitors can go down into an old mine.
