About the museum
Prøysenstua is the old cotter’s farm (husmannsplass) under the farm Hjelmstad at Rudshøgda in Ringsaker, where the author and ballad singer Alf Prøysen (1914–1970) was born and grew up. The house dates from the 1860s. Prøysen bought it in 1955 as a home for his parents, but sold it the same year to his nephew Rolf Hagen, whose family lived there until Ringsaker municipality took over in 1985. The main room has been restored, the cowshed and barn have been returned to how they looked in Prøysen’s childhood in the 1920s, and the site was protected in 2018.
Prøysenhuset lies in the forest just above the cotter’s farm. The building was designed by Snøhetta and was completed in time for the centenary of Prøysen’s birth on 23 July 2014. Since 2013 the house has been a department under the culture office of Ringsaker municipality. Here there is an exhibition about Alf Prøysen, including “bokhylla” (the bookshelf) and “alfabetet” (the alphabet), Snekker Andersens stue (Snekker Andersen’s room) and an activity room for children. Prøysensalen is used for concerts, performances and conferences.
Visitors can enter the childhood home Prøysenstua together with one of the house’s guides. In summer you can also visit Heggeli, a restored house set back in time, with sounds from the period when Olaf and Julie Prøysen lived there. Kafé Julie serves lunch and dinner, and the café and shop can be visited without an entrance ticket.
