About the museum
Ringebu stave church (stavkirke) was built in the early 13th century and is one of the largest of the 28 stave churches still standing in Norway. Next to the church lies Ringebu parsonage (prestegard), and Gudbrandsdalsmusea is responsible for the exhibitions in both.
On the ground floor of the northern part of the main building, the former tenant rooms (forpakterrommene), there are three rooms with cultural-history exhibitions. The old kitchen was used for cooking until the mid-1950s. The exhibition tells of the history of the parsonage and the houses on the farm, and a separate board shows all the priests of Ringebu back to the Middle Ages. A montage shows the work on the large garden complex.
The stave church exhibition shows finds from the archaeological excavations in the church in 1980–81, together with texts about the history of the church and the parish. The objects illuminate both the history of the building and rites of passage such as baptism, confession, communion, confirmation, betrothal, marriage and burial. The exhibitions were made in cooperation with Ringebu historielag (local history society), Stiftelsen Ringebu Prestegard and volunteers.
