About the museum
Steinsland klyngetun lies at Søndre Steinsland in Tjeldsund, just east of Tjeldsundbrua, and is one of the last remaining cluster farmsteads in Northern Norway. Ole R. Olsen gave the buildings for museum purposes in 1993. Tjeldsund municipality owns them, and Sør-Troms Museum runs them.
Aaronstua, the main house, was built in 1840, divided in 1870, used as a school until 1910 and rebuilt in 1932. The house got electricity in 1936, running water in 1940 and a telephone in 1946. The stabbur (storehouse) dates from 1939 and the cowshed from 1922, and behind the cowshed stands a partly restored grain store said to date from the 1700s. Aaronstua is furnished with furniture and household objects from earlier times. The stabbur houses a general store with fittings from the old Tovik shop, and in the cowshed there is a cultural history exhibition from the former Skånland municipality. Part of the cowshed is devoted to Regine Normann, Northern Norway's first female writer.
