About the museum

Setesdalsmuseet is "a museum along the valley" (et museum på langs), stretching through Setesdal from Hovden in the north to Iveland in the south. It covers the five municipalities of Iveland, Evje og Hornnes, Bygland, Valle and Bykle, and presents the history of the valley at 13 places. The main building, Bjugsbakk, lies at Rysstad in Valle and has permanent exhibitions as well as changing summer exhibitions. It is open in the season, and otherwise at events and by arrangement.

The museum has special expertise in building preservation, folk costume and old photographs, in addition to objects and local history from the valley. Belonging to the museum are, among others, Rygnestad museum, Tveitetunet in Valle, Bygland museum, Bykle gamle kyrkje (old church), Huldreheimen, Hovden jernvinnemuseum (iron smelting museum), Evje mineralsti (mineral trail) and the steamboat Bjoren.

Setesdalsmuseet is part of Aust-Agder museum og arkiv IKS together with Kuben in Arendal and Grimstad bys museer. Staff are happy to help visitors with the exhibitions, old pictures and local history books about the valley.
