About the museum

Grimdalstunet is the farm where the sculptor Anne Grimdalen grew up. She was born on 1 November 1899 at Grimdalen in Skafså and became one of Norway's leading sculptors from the interwar period until the 1960s. Her works are large and monumental, and she holds a special place as a woman in the field.

The farm is regarded as the best-preserved complete mountain farm in Telemark, and the oldest houses date from the 17th century. All the buildings stand where they have always stood, and none has been moved here to create a museum. The farmyard has ten original buildings and a mill house. The farm became a museum in 1965.

The Sculpture House opened in 1973 and is the oldest of four sculpture museums in Vest-Telemark. Many of Anne Grimdalen's works are shown here. In the basement there are art exhibitions, and paintings by Karl Erik Harr about the Draumkvedet also hang here. The farm lies 630 metres above sea level.
