About the museum
Mining at Åmdals Verk began in 1691, and the history of the site goes back to the 17th century. Since the start, about one million tonnes of rock and probably more than 8,000 tonnes of copper have been extracted. Ownership changed several times, and operations alternated between standstill and growth.
At its peak over 300 people worked at the copper mines, which operated until 1945. Birger Bastiansen, a former miner, helped to start the mining museum in the 1980s.
Today the mines are a museum and geology centre run by Vest-Telemark Museum. Visitors can walk through the old mines with a guide or see moving models that show how the copper was produced. The area is rich in minerals and surrounded by nature and hiking trails, including the trail to Cross Cut.
