About the museum
Fyresdal bygdemuseum was established in 1909 and is one of the oldest local-history open-air museums in Norway. It lies in Øyskogen, a park in the centre of Fyresdal, and shows buildings and objects from the Middle Ages up to more recent times.
Øyskogen is regarded as an old sacred site and has a burial ground from the Migration Period. The burial mounds probably date from the period AD 400–600. The mounds were status symbols and at the same time places of worship and of contact with the ancestors.
Nearby lies Folkestadbyen, a small “town” that grew up at the end of the 19th century around a trading farm by Fyresdalsvatnet. The bakery in the town has been restored as it looked in the 1920s. A sign from 2015 shows a town walk along Skippergata and Lensmannsgata. Since 2003 the museum has been part of Vest-Telemark Museum.
