About the museum
Amtmannsgården Steinberg lies in Vestre Toten and is a preserved farm complex from the early 1800s. Here lived the Eidsvoll representative, sorenskriver (district judge) and amtmann (county governor) Lauritz Weidemann, together with his wife Ditlevine and their children. During the Weidemann family’s time many major improvements were made, and the forward-looking enhetslåven (unit barn) from 1836 was the last major change to the buildings.
The daughters Amalie, Nahyda and Ingeborg lived on the farm together with their brother Hannibal, all unmarried, until the last survivor, Amalie, sold the farm to farm manager Jens Stenberg in 1899. The Weidemann family is buried in the private burial site on the farm. The buildings were protected in 1924, and the whole farm was bought by Toten Museumslag (Toten Local History Society) in 1934. When the protection was extended in 2023, the entire property, with yard, park, burial site, farmland and forest, was secured for the future.
At Steinberg there is the original 1814 setting, which Eidsvollsbygningen has had to recreate. The yard, the houses and the park look as they did in the early 1800s. A guide from Mjøsmuseet gives insight into the lives of both the gentry and the working people in the home, and the museum offers separate tours for garden enthusiasts of the beautiful park from the time of Lauritz and Ditlevine Weidemann. Toten Historielag has its offices at the farm.
