About the museum
Veien gamle skole (the old Veien school) was inaugurated on 22 October 1864 and is one of Ringerike's oldest permanent school buildings. The house was built of logs with wooden floors, and later the walls were panelled and linoleum laid on the floors. The school was in use until the summer of 1965, when the pupils moved to the new Veien skole. The school was originally built on the initiative of chaplain (kapellan) Peder Broch and farmer Olaus Olsen Færden.
The school building lies in Veienmarka, in the middle of an Iron Age burial field, in the same cultural environment as Veien kulturminnepark. A separate school museum was originally planned, and three houses were demolished for the purpose. The construction never went ahead, and the timber was used for Kjerratmuseet in Åsa. When Ringerike historielag (local history society) was offered premises in the old school, this became the site of the school museum.
Today Ringerike historielag runs the museum on the ground floor. One of the rooms is furnished as an ordinary rural classroom of the 1930s, with old wooden desks seating 18 pupils. The schoolroom stands roughly as it originally did. Among the objects is a harmonium that belonged to one of the teachers, and the old teacher's lectern. The municipality carried out an exterior renovation in 2023.
