About the museum

The Carl and Gerhart Hauptmann House (Dom Carla i Gerharta Hauptmannów) stands in the Valley of the Seven Houses in Szklarska Poręba. The Hauptmann brothers settled here in 1890, and their house became the heart of an artists’ colony. Gerhart Hauptmann later received the Nobel Prize in Literature, and Carl is the author of “Księga Ducha Gór” (Book of the Spirit of the Mountains).

Artists in the brothers’ circle included Otto Mueller, Max Wislicenus, Fritz Erler, Paula and Otto Modersohn, and Wanda Bibrowicz. In 1922 the artists founded the Stowarzyszenie Twórców św. Łukasza (Association of St Luke’s Artists), known as łukaszowcy.

The house is now a branch of the Karkonosze Museum in Jelenia Góra. The institution looks after the legacy of both writers and researches the artistic life of the Karkonosze. The permanent exhibition “Kolonie artystyczne Szklarskiej Poręby” (Artists’ Colonies of Szklarska Poręba) first shows the German artists’ colony and then the postwar generation of artists, including the Galeria Wlastimila Hofmana (Wlastimil Hofman Gallery) and the colony “Nowy Młyn” (New Mill). The garden adjoining the house is the Park Ducha Gór (Spirit of the Mountains Park).
