About the museum

The water power station in Szklarska Poręba (German: Schreiberhau) was built in 1900 for a roofing felt and cardboard factory founded in 1872 by Otto Opitz. In 1935 the private plant was connected to the national power grid of Germany. After the Second World War, when the town came within Poland’s borders, the former power station was turned into a museum.

The museum opened on 15 May 1975 on the initiative of engineer Ludwik Szczepaniak, who was its curator for many years. It is run by the Jelenia Góra branch of the Stowarzyszenie Elektryków Polskich (Association of Polish Electrical Engineers). The building stands in the Kamienna valley, right next to national road No. 3.

The collection numbers more than 600 exhibits, including electricity meters, current and voltage transformers, transformers, insulators, dynamos, measuring instruments, a generating set from 1912, an electrician’s uniform, an address book from 1925, and books and periodicals. From the viewing balcony, set up in 1995, visitors can watch the working hydroelectric plant with two Francis turbines from 1922.
