About the museum

The Mineral Museum in Szklarska Poręba is a private institution run by the Sokołowski family, who also operate a similar museum in Kamień Pomorski. It was founded in 1993 as a collectors’ museum and draws on the old tradition of private geological collections that spread knowledge about nature. A reviewer from the scientific community pointed to the scientific and educational value of the collections and the high standard of the museum’s educational work.

The collection comprises almost 2,500 exhibits: minerals and fossils from all over the world, as well as the Gibeon meteorite, which comes from outer space. The mineral collections from the Karkonosze and Izera Mountains, the calcites and stalactites from Wojcieszów and the ore minerals from Trepča and Cavnik are considered unique.

In front of the building stands the “Las Karboński” (Carboniferous Forest), i.e. petrified trunks of Dadoxylon trees about 300 million years old. A separate section is devoted to fossils and dinosaur skeletons – according to the museum, the largest private collection of these reptiles in Poland. The museum also runs an online shop and educational activities.
