About the museum

The JUNA Land Museum is housed in the building of a former inn and coaching station on the old route from the Izera Mountains to the Karkonosze. In the mid-19th century the building was called Karczma Głodowa (Hunger Inn), because bread for the workers building the nearby “road of hunger” (droga głodu) was baked there. After World War II it served as a coaching station and later as a motel, and after a fire in the early 1990s the building was bought by Juliusz Naumowicz, initiator of the revival of the Sudeten Walloon Brotherhood.

Museum rooms with local mineralogical curiosities, handicrafts and memorabilia of Sudeten guides and GOPR mountain rescuers were gradually opened in the building. The wooden structure was completely destroyed by a fire on 18 March 2015. From 2016 the building was rebuilt with co-financing from European Union funds, and the renovated museum was solemnly opened on the anniversary of the brotherhood in September 2018.

The present exhibition covers more than 350 m² and shows a colourful collection of minerals, local traditions of the mountain treasure hunters, and the history of mineral extraction in the Sudetes. Visitors can play the Wielki Bęben Paradny (Great Ceremonial Drum), learn about the work of alchemists and laboratory assistants, see an exhibition of fluorescent minerals and solve a museum quest. There is also a mineral shop next door.
