About the museum

The Muzeum Sakralne Katedry Zamojskiej was set up to protect valuable objects gathered over the centuries at the Zamość collegiate church, later the cathedral. The treasury held relics, chalices, monstrances, embroidered liturgical vestments and books, largely coming from gifts of the Zamoyski family. Some of the objects survived despite the wars and the liquidation of the Zamoyski Entail after the Second World War.

The museum was officially opened in the building known as the Infułatka on 25 October 1987. The arrangement of the treasury was undertaken by Jan Zamoyski, the last ordynat, and the costs were covered by the Zamoyski family. In 2019 the most important exhibits were moved to the restored former vicarage (Wikarówka) by the cathedral in the Old Town.

The permanent exhibition “Skarbiec Historii, Sztuki, Nauki” (Treasury of History, Art and Science) shows the gifts of successive ordynats, members of the Chapter, professors of the Zamość Academy and the nobility and patricians of the town. The museum achieved its greatest fame through the relic of a thorn from the Crown of Thorns, which according to tradition was brought to Zamość around 1605.
