About the museum
The Rotunda was built in 1825–1831 as an artillery battery within the fortifications of the Zamość Fortress. In June 1940 it was seized by the Gestapo, which set up an investigation prison and a transit camp there, in which people from the Zamość region in particular were held.
During the war the Rotunda was also a site of mass executions and the burning of bodies. According to the museum’s description, between 6 and 8 thousand people were killed here. After the war the site became a place of remembrance, known to residents as the Monument to the Martyrdom of the Zamość Region, and from 1947 a museum operated here.
The Rotunda is currently looked after by the Muzeum Zamojskie. Information boards and epitaphs have been gathered in nineteen cells. Cells II–XV contain symbolic graves of the victims; one cell is devoted to the children from the Zamość region who were deported and murdered by the Germans, and another presents materials on Zamość during the occupation, including announcements of executions and photographs from the exhumations.
