About the museum
The museum opened on 22 May 2015 on the initiative of Zamość photographer and collector Adam Gąsianowski. The exhibits, which he has collected since childhood, fill his private photo studio on the ground floor of a tenement house at ul. Staszica 15, on the Rynek Wielki.
The collection includes about six thousand photographs, among them cardboard visiting cards called tekturki, tintypes and more than two thousand glass negatives. The oldest date from the 1850s. They include works by pre-war Zamość photographers, among them Antoni Jabłoński, Jan Strzyżowski and the Suchowierski family.
The collection also includes about a thousand cameras: bellows cameras from around 1850, wooden studio cameras, a Zeiss Ikon spy camera from the 1920s and numerous aerial cameras. In a separate room, enlargers, flash lamps and other equipment are displayed. Since 2013 a columnar photoplastikon, rebuilt by the owner, with 58 stereoscopic images has been in operation.
