About the museum
For centuries Orońsko belonged to the Starosielski, Szydłowiecki and Odrowąż families, and in the early 19th century it flourished thanks to the engineer Franciszek Ksawery Christiani, who founded the park and brought in the first sculptures. In 1869 the indebted estate was bought by Helena Pruszak, later the wife of the painter Józef Brandt. During the First World War the manor house and the palace were plundered, and Brandt died in 1915. After the Second World War the estate was nationalised, and its buildings housed, among other things, a primary school, a health centre and the administration of a fish farm.
Since 1965 Orońsko has been the site of sculpture plein-airs, and in 1981 the Centre of Polish Sculpture was established here. The complex includes the Palace of Józef Brandt (a 19th-century neo-Renaissance villa with reconstructed interiors), the Orangery from the years after 1869, a former chapel from 1841 (an exhibition space since 1987), the Coach House (Wozownia) from 1905, the Sculptor’s House (Dom Rzeźbiarza) in a former granary, and the Museum of Contemporary Sculpture, built in 1989–1992.
The English-style Sculpture Park, laid out in the first half of the 19th century, covers 12.3 ha and presents more than a hundred works; seven historical sculptures have survived. Plein-airs, workshops and symposia take place in the park. The Orangery and the Museum of Contemporary Sculpture are currently being modernised, and the permanent exhibition of Magdalena Abakanowicz in the Coach House was closed in March 2025 in connection with an EU-funded project.
