About the museum
Construction of the iron works in Chlewiska began in spring 1894 by the French Metallurgical Company (Francuskie Towarzystwo Metalurgiczne), and the work was completed in 1895. From 1895 to 1912 the complex belonged to the Plater family, and before the Second World War the plant was leased by the Huta Pokój (Peace Ironworks). The works operated, with breaks, until 1940, and after the war factories producing metal goods were located here.
The site was then placed under the care of the Muzeum Techniki w Warszawie (Museum of Technology in Warsaw), and today it is a field branch of the National Museum of Technology. The two-hectare complex has kept a legible technological sequence of iron production: the building of a charcoal-fired blast furnace with blowers, heaters and a water lift, and three 19th-century roasting kilns called prażaki. The architecture of the buildings has classicist features, and the whole is regarded as unique in Poland and in Europe.
In the former halls there are permanent exhibitions: more than fifty 20th-century cars, including prototypes, more than forty motorcycles and mopeds, a collection of sewing machines with a former shoemaker’s workshop, and machines for processing metal and wood. The site hosts rallies of historic vehicles, family picnics, school workshops and historical reconstructions.
