About the museum
The Radom municipal power station began operating on 15 March 1901 in a neo-Gothic building of red brick. The plant generated electricity until 1956; afterwards the building housed a heating plant, and after its closure in 1998 it housed offices of institutions and companies.
The idea of a new home for the growing collection of contemporary art was put forward in 2003 by Andrzej Wajda, who donated more than seventy works to the collections of the Radom museum. The collections were then built up by a branch of the Muzeum im. Jacka Malczewskiego, namely the Museum of Contemporary Art. In the end the former power station was adapted into an art centre, which was established in 2005 and opened after reconstruction in November 2014.
Today the Mazowieckie Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej “Elektrownia” runs temporary exhibitions and presentations of its collection, an art-house cinema, a café, a reading room and an educational programme for schools, families and seniors. The institution’s collection numbers almost 900 objects, which are available in an online catalogue, including photographs, prints, drawings, paintings, sculptures and video recordings by Polish and foreign artists from the 1950s onwards.
