About the museum

The beginnings of museum work in Radom go back to 1913, when the collector Rev. Jan Wiśniewski handed over part of his collections to the Radom branch of the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society (Polskie Towarzystwo Krajoznawcze). The outbreak of the First World War halted the organisation of the museum, and the collections were kept by private individuals. The first regional museum opened on 18 March 1923 in one of the halls of the former starosty building, and this date is regarded as the beginning of museum work in Radom.

Between the wars the museum changed its premises several times; from 1930 it was housed in the building at ul. Poniatowskiego 6. During the Second World War the collections remained under the control of the occupier, and Stanisław Trzebiński, who was involved in looking after them, was deported to the camp in Oświęcim (Auschwitz), from where he did not return. After the war the museum, as the Municipal Museum (Muzeum Miejskie), opened an exhibition of Polish painting in October 1945 in the building at ul. Piłsudskiego 12.

Today the institution, funded by the Mazovian Voivodeship, is based at Rynek 11, in the building of the former Piarist college. The collections cover archaeology, history, old and Polish art of the second half of the 20th century, natural history, non-professional art and folk culture, and non-European cultures. The permanent exhibitions include a presentation on Jacek Malczewski, the Pinno family collection and natural history displays, while a separate permanent exhibition, “Muzeum Historii Radomia” (“Museum of the History of Radom”), presents the history of the city.
