About the museum
The cottage stands near Kościeliska Street and belonged to the Gąsienica Sobczak family. The oldest part of the building dates from around 1830, and its present form is due to an extension at the end of the 19th century. It is an example of traditional highlander (Podhale) building.
The branch of the Tatra Museum opened on 1 July 2009. The permanent exhibition “Zakopane Style – Inspirations” (Styl zakopiański – inspiracje) shows the sources of this style: folk architecture, the furnishings of highlander cottages and ethnographic collections.
The Black Room (izba czarna), furnished like an interior from the second half of the 19th century, contains the oldest objects in the museum. The White Room (izba biała) presents the collection of Maria and Bronisław Dembowski, numbering nearly 400 objects: glass paintings, ceramics, łyżniki (carved wooden ladles), sculptures, costumes and shepherds’ equipment. The collection was assembled between 1886 and 1893, and the Tatra Museum received it as a gift in 1922.
