About the museum
The Antoni Rząsa Gallery is located in the house that the sculptor built together with his wife Halina, and in which the whole family lived. Antoni Rząsa came to Zakopane from Futoma in 1938 to study at the School of Wood Industry (Szkoła Przemysłu Drzewnego), and after the war returned here in 1948. He later taught sculpture at Antoni Kenar’s school.
The gallery was opened on 21 July 1976. Antoni and Halina Rząsa died in 1980, and the house and gallery were taken over by their son Marcin (born 1965), who has been its host ever since. In 1986 the gallery’s tenth anniversary was celebrated. In time the interiors also began to host exhibitions of young art, and on the initiative of Michelle Kokosowski a foundation was set up.
The permanent exhibition is conceived as a “teatr rzeźb, w którym każda gra swoją rolę” (theatre of sculptures in which each plays its own role): the arrangement of the works and the space between them form an installation that is constantly recomposed. Expressive, unconventional sculptures with religious themes predominate, including crucified Christs and Sorrowful Madonnas (Matki Boskie bolesne). The place is looked after by three generations of a family of artists and educators.
