About the museum

Willa Koliba is the first house in the Zakopane style, built to a design by Stanisław Witkiewicz. It was erected in 1892–1893 for the collector Zygmunt Gnatowski and carried out by local builders. The Zakopane style drew on highland wooden architecture and was intended to become a national architectural style.

The Muzeum Stylu Zakopiańskiego (Museum of the Zakopane Style) opened in December 1993, roughly one hundred years after the villa was built. It belongs to the Tatra Museum. The interiors were arranged by Władysław Hasior.

The oldest part of the villa has five rooms: the dining room, living room and bedroom on the ground floor, and on the upper floor Gnatowski’s room and the maid’s room. Gnatowski’s ethnographic collection is displayed in the highlander room. Besides the permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions are organised in the villa.
