About the museum

The manor house in Krzesławice, a village that today lies within the boundaries of Nowa Huta, was built in 1826. In earlier centuries the estate belonged to the monasteries of Miechów and Mogiła, and at the end of the 18th century it was leased by Hugo Kołłątaj, reformer of the Jagiellonian University and co-author of the Constitution of 3 May. In 1876 Jan Matejko bought the manor with the money from the sale of his painting “Stefan Batory pod Pskowem” (Stefan Batory at Pskov), extended it to his own design and added a painting studio.

Krzesławice became the artist’s favourite summer residence: he lived permanently in Kraków, but in the summer and during the holidays he painted many portraits, sketches and pictures here. After his death the estate passed from hand to hand, and after the Second World War the building fell into ruin. It was saved by the Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Sztuk Pięknych w Krakowie (Kraków Society of Friends of Fine Arts), which began a thorough restoration in 1960 and opened a museum in the manor house in 1966.

The present exhibition shows furnished living rooms from the late 19th century, including the drawing room, the dining room and the studio with Matejko’s revolving easel. Sketches by the artist are displayed, among them designs for the polychromy of St Mary’s Church (kościół Mariacki), and a gallery of Polish kings and princes. One room is dedicated to the memory of Hugo Kołłątaj. The manor is surrounded by a landscape park of several hectares with century-old trees.
