About the museum
The exhibition “Stan zagrożenia” (“State of Threat”) is located in a 1950s air-raid shelter beneath the building of the Mechanical Schools Complex No. 3 on the Szkolne 37 housing estate. It was the first shelter opened within the Podziemna Nowa Huta tourist route, and the exhibition opened in 2019.
The exhibition tells of the instinctive need to hide from danger and of the most interesting shelter structures in the world. It shows a model of a standard shelter and a space with questions for visitors that prompt reflection. In Nowa Huta more than 250 shelters were built in 1953–1960, as the construction of the shelters overlapped with the construction of the new town.
The museum recommends starting the tour of Podziemna Nowa Huta with the main exhibition on the Szkolne 22 housing estate, and then coming here. The ticket office is reached through the main entrance to the school.
