About the museum
Podziemna Nowa Huta consists of two addresses in the Nowa Huta district, where the heritage of the Cold War shelters is presented. At the beginning of the 1950s the authorities of the People's Republic of Poland began building air-raid shelters, and in Nowa Huta more than 250 were built in 1953–1960, because the construction of the shelters coincided with the building of the new town. Many of them changed their purpose, and those that kept their original form long attracted attention as intriguing remnants of a bygone era.
The main permanent exhibition of the route is “Schrony w Nowej Hucie – dziedzictwo zimnej wojny” (“Shelters in Nowa Huta – Cold War Heritage”) on the Szkolne 22 housing estate, where the ground floor of the building and an original air-raid shelter from the 1950s are used for the exhibition. The exhibition presents the context of the Cold War and the construction of Nowa Huta, the history and construction of the Nowa Huta shelters, and refers to present-day threats and safety. Interactive elements draw on visitors' own experiences, and a path on safety in everyday situations has been prepared for children.
The exhibitions were realised in accordance with Freeman Tilden's theory of heritage interpretation, which assumes not only passing on knowledge but also inspiring visitors and drawing on their personal references.
