About the museum
The Department of City Ethnology, a branch of the Katowice History Museum, is located in Nikiszowiec, a workers' estate built in the first decade of the 20th century. The building was originally designed as a laundry, drying room, mangle room and bathhouse for women and children.
In the 1990s the Galeria Magiel was operating here. It had been founded in 1996 by a local socio-cultural association and collected souvenirs from residents of the eastern districts of Katowice. Due to financial difficulties, the museum leased the building in 2003, and in 2005 the city bought it. The building was renovated in 2010–2011, and on 8 April 2011 the collections of the ethnology department were moved there from the main building at ul. Szafranka.
Today the branch presents three permanent exhibitions on the daily life of the working class of Upper Silesia, above all miners: a reconstructed workers' flat, the former laundry and mangle room, and works by non-professional artists from the Janów Group (Grupa Janowska).
