About the museum
The building of the Izba Śląska (Silesian Room), known as the Gawlikówka, stands in Giszowiec Park at Plac pod Lipami. It was designed by Jerzy and Emil Zillmann at the beginning of the 20th century as the estate's economic outbuilding; it contained rooms attached to the inn, stables, carriage houses and garages.
In 1986 the “Staszic” mine handed the building over to retired employees, who set up a club here and restored the interiors in the traditional Silesian style. The amateur painter Ewald Gawlik, associated with the Janów Group, was given three rooms on the upper floor, which marked the beginning of cultural activity here. The collection was enriched with regional furniture and everyday objects, mainly gathered by miners and residents.
Today the building is part of the Giszowiec branch of the Municipal House of Culture in Katowice (MDK). Visitors can see interiors furnished in the style of a Silesian room and works by Ewald Gawlik.
