About the museum
The Izba Tradycji (Tradition Room) was created on 4 May 1984 and handed over to the workforce of the smelter on the 150th anniversary of the company in Szopienice. It is housed in the former Central Chemical Laboratory building from 1897, a remnant of the “Bernhardi” zinc smelter owned by the Giesche company. The first curator was Dr Emanuel Wilczok, a long-serving smelter employee, whose name the room has borne since 1994.
The room is now looked after by retired smelter workers, who also act as guides. Since November 2004 the building has also housed the headquarters of the Stowarzyszenie na rzecz powstania Muzeum Hutnictwa Cynku w Katowicach-Szopienicach (Association for the Establishment of a Zinc Smelting Museum in Katowice-Szopienice).
The collection includes smelters’ tools, furnace documentation, old moulds and zinc products, technical documentation from the 19th and early 20th centuries, photographs, technical drawings and films about the production of non-ferrous metals. Visitors can learn about zinc production technology and view a panorama of the smelting complex designed by the Zillmanns, as well as souvenirs, paintings and prints related to the works. A separate section is devoted to the equipment of the works fire brigade and to an original share certificate of the Giesche company.
