About the museum
The Museum of the History of Katowice was founded in 1976 on the initiative of the museum section of the Katowice Social and Cultural Society (Katowickie Towarzystwo Społeczno-Kulturalne), which set up a museum room in the city without a statute, budget or staff. In the same year the city authorities handed over to the museum the building at ul. ks. J. Szafranka 9, where the institution is housed to this day.
In January 1981 the room became a branch of the Upper Silesian Museum in Bytom, and from 1 January 1983 it has operated as the independent Museum of the History of Katowice. A bequest of a collection of portraits by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, depicting a single model whom the artist called the Asymmetric Lady (Asymetryczna Dama), contributed to the founding of the museum.
The museum is run by the city of Katowice. Besides the main building, the institution runs branches in Nikiszowiec (the Department of City Ethnology), the Theatre and Film Department of the Barbara and Stanisław Ptak Museum, and the church of St Michael the Archangel with a lapidarium in Kościuszko Park. The main building shows permanent exhibitions on the history of the city and burgher interiors, and in front of the entrance stands a monument to Witkacy by Tomasz Wenklar, unveiled in 2007.
