About the museum

The idea of a sports museum in Bydgoszcz was born in August 2008, after the World Junior Athletics Championships held in the city. The aim was to commemorate Bydgoszcz's rich sporting traditions, its many clubs and the athletes who achieved success in Poland and at the Olympic Games. After the plans were announced, the gallery quickly grew through donations from clubs and private individuals.

The exhibition space is the newly built administration building of CWZS Zawisza, next to the modernised Zdzisław Krzyszkowiak stadium on ul. Gdańska. The gallery was officially opened on 10 June 2009. At that time it was formally a branch of the Galeria Miejska BWA; it is now run by the Cywilno-Wojskowy Związek Sportowy “Zawisza” Bydgoszcz (Civil-Military Sports Association “Zawisza” Bydgoszcz).

The first display included medals and souvenirs of around twenty Bydgoszcz Olympic medallists, a gallery on Bydgoszcz rowing, club archives and trophies, and a large collection of cups. In December 2017 an additional exhibition, “Sportowa Bydgoszcz”, opened, covering the most important sporting events in the city's history.
