About the museum
Work on the open-air museum in Podmokle Małe began in 2004. A group of local people set out to save old farm machines from oblivion: they searched for them, repaired them and restored them. All exhibits were donated by residents of Podmokle and the surrounding villages. The official opening took place on 24 June 2007, and the museum was expanded in 2009–2010. It was built with funds from the Interreg IIIA Micro-Project Fund of the Sprewa–Nysa–Bóbr Euroregion.
The museum operates at the Zespół Edukacyjny im. Franciszka Sarnowskiego in Podmokle Małe and is a municipal institution. About 200 agricultural machines and devices have been gathered here, some in the open air and some under wooden sheds. They include hand mills, a horse-powered gear (kierat), harrows, a grain crusher, small mills, horse collars and wooden carts, as well as old household items such as buckets, barrels, pumps and sewing machines.
The greatest attraction is the koźlak-type windmill, the oldest type of European windmill, which was moved from Potrzebowo by heritage enthusiasts. Visitors can also see beehives and bee trees (barcie), dovecotes, folk sculptures and a bread oven from the late 19th century, brought from a farm in Kolesin. After restoration, the oven is sometimes used to bake bread and flatbreads. The open-air museum lies on the Lubusz Wine and Honey Trail.
