About the museum
The Regional Museum in Świebodzin was founded in 1971 on the initiative of the local Society of Friends of the Świebodzin Land (Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Ziemi Świebodzińskiej), which organised it. The town had older museum traditions: in 1903, on the initiative of the local Regional Society, municipal collections were created, which were turned into a multi-department Local Museum in the 1930s. That display was destroyed, and most of the collections were scattered in 1945.
The exhibition is housed in six rooms on the ground floor of the historic town hall, whose origins go back to the 15th century. After a fire in 1541 the building was rebuilt in the German Renaissance style on late-Gothic models, which is why some of the rooms retain star and crystal vaults. The historic clock tower was built during the 16th-century extension of the town hall, and its present neo-Renaissance form dates from the 19th century.
The collections number around 9,000 objects from the fields of history, archaeology, art, numismatics, technology, ethnography and natural history; more than 1,200 of them are shown in the permanent exhibitions. The most valuable include the cartography of Lower Silesia, local painting from the first half of the 20th century, old postcards, Gothic and Mannerist sculpture, and numismatics. Two permanent exhibitions are devoted to the history of the town and region, and to the nature of the Lubusz Land.
