About the museum
The museum tradition in Zbąszyń goes back to 1938, when one of the first museums in a Polish village opened in Przyprostynia; the development of the institution was interrupted by the Second World War. In the 1960s the Polish Tourist and Regional Studies Society (Polskie Towarzystwo Turystyczno-Krajoznawcze) set up a regional museum in the gate tower of the castle. It was closed in 1990, and its collections were handed over to the local cultural centre.
After several years of temporary exhibitions, the present Zbąszyń Land and Kozioł Region Museum (Muzeum Ziemi Zbąszyńskiej i Regionu Kozła) was established in 2004, operating as a unit of the Zbąszyń Cultural Centre. Its seat is the former Primary School No. 2 on the market square, thoroughly renovated in recent years.
The archaeological-historical exhibition presents the history of the area from the Stone Age to the 20th century, including vessels and tools from the Neolithic and the Lusatian culture, a 19th-century bicycle and pre-war postcards. The ethnographic section shows the folk culture of the region: costumes, embroidery and instruments, including wedding and ritual kozły, folk wind instruments from which the name of the region derives.
