About the museum
The Robert Koch Museum is a branch of the Regional Museum in Wolsztyn and is housed in a building erected in 1842–1846 in the English Neo-Gothic style. The building originally served as a hospital for the poor, and its founder was the Englishwoman Marie Pearce. From 1872 to 1880 Robert Koch lived here; he worked in Wolsztyn as district physician and carried out microbiological research in a modest laboratory set up in his own flat.
In Wolsztyn Koch described the developmental cycle of the anthrax bacterium and published the results in 1876. He later worked in Berlin, where in 1882 he presented the discovery of the bacteria causing tuberculosis, and in 1905 he received the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Remembrance of the scientist in the town was initiated by a Memorial Room (Izba Pamięci) opened in 1958.
The present museum has operated since 2 May 1996, on the initiative of the Polish-German Foundation and the Robert Koch Scientific Association. The permanent exhibition shows the life and scientific work of the physician in the building where he made his first discoveries, and presents the instruments and workplace of the doctor and scientist. The museum also carries out research, museum lessons, conferences and meetings.
