About the museum
The Mission Museum is run by the Congregation of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, and it is housed in rooms of the Higher Major Seminary in the post-Cistercian abbey in Obra. The Cistercians ministered and managed the estate here from 1231 to 1836, until the monastery was dissolved by the Prussian authorities. In 1926 the Oblates arrived in Obra; in the former monastery they set up a seminary and took care of the parish.
The museum exhibition shows relics connected with the Cistercians’ stay in Obra as well as numerous exhibits from mission countries around the world. The collections include sculptures, everyday objects, elements of costumes and objects of worship from, among others, Cameroon, Tanzania, Madagascar, Lesotho, Brazil, Paraguay, northern Canada, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, as well as from Poland and Ukraine.
Visits to the museum take place by prior arrangement with the curators of the collections.
