About the museum

The museum room was set up at the headquarters of Polskie Radio Katowice at ul. Ligonia 29 and opened on 27 July 2009, on the 130th anniversary of the birth of Stanisław Ligoń, a writer, painter and cultural activist who had been performing in front of the station’s microphone since the end of 1927 and is its patron. Over time the collection grew so large that a bigger room was needed.

In 2014 the museum moved to the renovated attic of the station building, which was erected in 1937 as the first and only new headquarters of a radio station in interwar Poland. Specialists from the Muzeum Śląskie (Silesian Museum) helped set up the exhibition, and the collection was gathered over many years by former employees and radio enthusiasts.

On a few dozen square metres, the exhibition shows a 1930s studio with a replica carbon microphone, a gramophone and an announcer’s desk, as well as mixing consoles, station and portable tape recorders, broadcast equipment and old radio receivers. Many devices still work, and when switched on they play recordings, including the voice of Stanisław Ligoń. A separate corner is dedicated to the station’s patron. The exhibition also includes a model of the first transmitting station at Brynów and the first radio laptop.
