About the museum

The Katowicki Skład Neonów (Katowice Neon Depot) is a museum and gallery of illuminated neon advertising signs from places that no longer exist. The idea for the collection came from Dominik Tokarski of the Moje Miasto (My City) association. The neons were rescued from rubbish tips or acquired through negotiations with the owners of the buildings on which they once hung. Collecting and restoring them took about two years and was costly.

The official opening took place on 31 October 2013. The exhibition is located in the Strefa Centralna club café at the Centrum Kultury Katowice (Katowice Culture Centre), pl. Sejmu Śląskiego 2. The neons are lit after dark. Some are originals, while others are reconstructions based on surviving documentation.

The collection, initially about eighteen exhibits, includes the sign “Katowice” taken from the old PKP railway station, the sign “Aria” from one of the hotels in Sosnowiec, and “Rejon Bożedary”. The oldest neon, nearly forty years old, comes from the Millenium cinema. In 2014 neons from the depot were also shown in the city, including on plac Szewczyka. As part of the event “Odsłona II”, a teapot from the Herbaciarnia Randia tea room, recreated from documentation, was presented. The city also runs a separate project, the Szlak Neonów (Neon Trail).
