About the museum

The Jerzy Kukuczka Memorial Room is located in Istebna, in the hamlet of Wilcze, in the mountaineer's family wooden house. Jerzy Kukuczka was born in Katowice, but his family came from Istebna, where he spent his childhood, rested between expeditions and worked on his books.

After his death in 1989 on the south face of Lhotse, many mountain enthusiasts began to visit the place. Seven years later the mountaineer's wife, Cecylia Kukuczka, opened the memorial room; the official opening took place in 1996. Cecylia Kukuczka still runs it today.

The interior holds mementoes of the mountaineer: photographs from expeditions, old climbing equipment, including a historic helmet and ice axe from the 1979 Lhotse expedition, medals, decorations and books. Flags bearing the names of the eight-thousanders of the Crown of the Himalayas are also on display. The room is complemented by a virtual museum available online.

The memorial room in the hamlet of Wilcze can be reached on foot along the blue Jerzy Kukuczka Trail (approx. 2 km from the car park between the centre of Istebna and the school), following the route description available online.
