About the museum

The Konarzewski Family Museum and Gallery is located on the Bucznik, a settlement and former artists' colony in Istebna. In 1922 the painter and sculptor Ludwik Konarzewski senior (1885–1954) began building a house and studio here. The place was named Bucznik after the old beech trees. The symbolic founding date of the colony is 3 May 1923, linked to the chapel of Our Lady, Queen of the Polish Crown, which the artist founded as a votive offering after returning from exile.

In the interwar period painting and sculpture studios operated here, as well as an informal art school for young people, and the “Bucznik” guesthouse hosted well-known artists and scholars. During the Second World War the buildings were demolished, except for the chapel, and most of the collection was looted or scattered. The family returned to the Bucznik in 1945.

Today visitors learn about the family's history, the history of the artists' colony and the private chapel. The story is illustrated with paintings and sculptures by Ludwik Konarzewski senior and junior, works by Joanna Konarzewska, ceramics, art textiles and souvenirs of the composer Stanisław Konarzewski. Family members guide visitors through the chapel and the gallery.
